Why You Should Make This Gluten Free Apple Crumb Pie
With all of those sugar-laden desserts on our holiday tables, it's always a good idea to offer one that is healthier and more nutritious. I am not saying we shouldn't enjoy treats and desserts, we can always find ways to cut back on all of that sugar.
This incredible apple crumb pie might look fancy, but it really is simple to make. The hardest part is chopping the apples and that is pretty easy to do.
When. visit over people's house for the holidays I like to bring a healthy appetizer like my Low Carb Spinach Artichoke Dip and a healthy dessert like this yummy pie so I am guaranteed nutritious options.
Fun fact, my dishes and desserts are usually the first to go.
Recipe Ingredients
- Walnuts - These are my favorite and make such a delicious, crunchy crust. You can use other nuts if you have an allergy or sensitivity. Pecans, almonds, pistachios and even macadamia nuts would also be delicious options for this crust. Use what you like or what you already have in the house.
- Almond flour - I use the super fine almond flour in all of my baked goods because it lends the lightest, ideal texture, especially in gluten free desserts.
- Coconut oil - I use refined coconut oil which has very little coconut taste (Yes, I know it's not a popular opinion but I don't like the taste of coconut!) The only issue is that refined coconut oil has less antioxidants and vitamins than the virgin coconut oil (as well as a higher smoke points which is good to remember for baked goods) so if you like the taste of coconut, then you can easily use virgin coconut oil.
- 100% pure maple syrup - The key here is to use 100% pure maple syrup. The taste and quality are far more superior to ones that just say "maple syrup".
- Egg - Obviously if you want to keep this vegan you need to make a flax egg. You simply mix together 1 tablespoon flax meal and 2.5 tablespoons water and it makes a wonderful substitute for eggs in baked goods.
- Granny smith apples - These are always my first choice when baking apple deserts. They are tart, lightly sweet and easy to find in most grocery stores all year long.
- Coconut sugar - Also known as coconut palm sugar. Basically, coconut sugar is less refined and processed than regular table sugar and maybe not spike your blood sugar levels the way that regular sugar does. You can use coconut sugar, regular sugar, brown sugar or sucanat (minimally processed raw cane sugar) in this recipe, all with delicious results. If you want to use a sugar alternative, I suggest using 2-3 tablespoons of Monk fruit in place of the coconut sugar.
Recipe FAQ's and Expert Tips
Absolutely. Prepare the pie up until it says to bake in the oven. Simply cover with aluminum foil and refrigerate until ready to bake, up to 2 days.
You must make sure the pie is completely baked through. Also, you must allow it to cool completely before serving, which I know can be extremely difficult because you will want to dig in straight out of the oven!
Yes! I can tell you that I have made this with better too and it's delicious. Use cold diced butter for the perfect crunchy texture.

I made this pie and it is really good! I
just have a question about the
crust. Mine turned out a bit soggy. I pulsed it for quite a bit but it never really formed a dough type ball and it was pretty sticky. I did follow the instructions. Thought maybe you would have some suggestions. Thanks
