If you are looking for a healthier Homemade Bloody Mary recipe that isn't loaded with unnecessary calories and sodium, then look no further. Brunch just a whole lot tastier...and healthier! I'll drink to that!

I definitely have brunch on my mind these days.

Did you know that your average homemade Bloody Mary can have up to 350 calories PER SERVING and over 1,500 mgs of sodium?  I figured with everyone juicing these days, why not juice your own bloody mary?  It adds so many vitamins and nutrients that all of those mixes don't have.

I really enjoy drinking a cocktail or two on occasion and I believe that I can still achieve a healthy, balanced lifestyle that includes the occasional cocktail. You can absolutely disagree with me, and that's ok. It's a free world for Pete's sake. But this is what I believe to be true.

With that being said, I can only have one or two drinks, aka moderation. If you aren't able to, then you have to do what works for you. Every body is different.  I am only sharing what works for me.

These delicious homemade Bloody Mary drinks would be yummy with some Low Carb Blueberry Scones, Pumpkin Gingerbread Muffins or this Gluten Free Peanut Butter Banana Bread. Why not have some Apple Chai Latte, Chamomile Latte or some Low Carb bulletproof Hot Chocolate along side your homemade Bloody Mary?

Why You Should Make This Homemade Bloody Mary

You can always use store bought tomato juice if you'd like.  Just read the ingredients (especially the sodium content!) There is so much unnecessary junk in these bottles juices.

Look for one that only is 100% juice and read the ingredients. Make sure there are no added oils or salt. The ingredients should only be tomatoes and some other vegetables, that's it.

You guys all know that I am all about moderation and balance. I completely believe we should be able to enjoy cocktails and treats every now and then. But then I thought, what if made my cocktails actually healthy?

Yes, I said healthy, not healthier.

This delicious homemade Bloody Mary actually contains vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in it, so yes, it is definitely a healthy option. Think about all of those other sugar-filled cocktails and you'll see what I mean. Especially brunch cocktails because many of them are loaded with sugar and bottles juices.

Why should people who are trying to eat healthier miss out on all of the fun? And that, my friends, is precisely why I came up with this Bloody Mary recipe.

    Recipe Tips

Back to the cocktails… You can easily make a homemade Bloody Mary ahead of time if you'd like, simple make the juice and store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.  Why not make life a little easier, right?

Better yet, make a whole pitcher of them so if you are making for a larger group you aren't spending all that time making each individual drink.  Make life easier and entertaining much more fun! This way if you are the host or hostess you can actually enjoy yourself too.

Honestly, that's my least favorite part about hosting. I am typically the one that has a couple of cocktails and ultimately I will forget to put out something because I really want to have fun with my guests. I don't want to be stuck in the kitchen making drinks or cooking.

Before you email me saying that you can't believe a nutritionist is encouraging drinking alcohol, settle down. (And yes, I do get these emails). I am very realistic and I truly believe that moderation is attainable.

This homemade Bloody Mary is actually light on the alcohol and loaded with vitamins and minerals.

    Ingredients

    • 3 medium ripe organic tomatoes I used heirloom, chopped
    • ½ cup organic baby carrots
    • handful basil leaves
    • 1 small onion
    • juice of half lemon
    • 3 ounces quality vodka 1.5 ounces per drink
    • ¼ teaspoon sea salt
    • dash of freshly ground black pepper
    • 2 dashes sriracha sauce or hot sauce
    • 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish optional
    • fresh celery stalks for garnish
    • olives for garnish

    Instructions

    • Add tomatoes, carrots, basil and onion to food processor and pulse until chopped.
    • Scrape sides of processor and pulse again until pureed.
    • Run the juice through a sieve over a bowl if you'd prefer a smoother texture. Stir until all the pulp and seeds remain.
    • Add tomato juice to a shaker along with vodka, lemon juice, salt, pepper, sriracha, Worcestershire sauce and horseradish if desired.
    • Shake for at least 15-20 seconds.
    • Pour into a cocktail glass onto of ice cubes. Garnish with celery sticks and olives.

    Notes

A fresh homemade Bloody Mary is so much better than any other mixes or pre-made ones out in grocery stores.

Bloodies are all about that garnish but oomph with the calories. Guess its make your own juice mix (which is much better anyway).

I want to like Bloody Mary's so badly, but I just don't. That being said, I try them all the time in hopes the flavors will stick w/ me, so I may just give this one a try, it being so pretty and all.
