I am taking a break from recipes today and sharing something with you all that I feel is very important.
I figured that most people who read my blog care about the ingredients in their food, right? So I decided to take it a step further. Do you read all of the ingredients in the products you use daily? I am not sure that most people do, but I thought it was important to share.
I started educating myself on the ingredients that are in these deodorants. Of course I became overwhelmed. There are so many different products out there claiming to all be “natural”.
I decided to try Tom’s of Maine natural deodorant. Tom’s of Maine natural deodorant has no aluminum, no petrochemicals, no parabens and no artificial fragrances or preservatives. Ok, I like that. Tom’s of Maine has been clinically proven to provide 24-hour odor protection. I like that too. 24 hours sounds good to me. Tom’s of Maine does no animal testing and contains no animal ingredients whatsoever. I know my vegan friends will be happy about that.
They sent me three varieties, Wild Lavender, Natural Powder and Unscented. I liked the smells of the lavender and the natural powder. I decided that I wasn’t able to make the change to full on unscented. But to each his own.
I don’t sweat that much, except for when I am working out. I run about 3 times a week and I take Bar Method classes 2-3 times a week. And I sweat. ALOT. So I was a little concerned about with not using an anti-perspirant anymore. But I decided that for my new venture, it’s more important that I don’t smell. EEEEK!
Here is my dear friend Sabina (and co-owner of The Bar Method Warren) in one of our Bar Method poses. Note her arms up in the air like that. Could I be in this pose comfortably using natural deodorant? Would I offend all of my fellow bar method friends with my horrible odor and not be allowed back as their nutritionist?
I started off with the powder scent. It was Day 3 of using Tom’s of Maine deodorant when I walked into the Bar Method studio just like any other day, excited to work off all of my stress and get a great workout in. My arms went up and down, several times and I was safe. The class was hard (thanks Kelly!) and I wasn’t smelly! Whew! That was a huge relief.
But to be honest, it took my body a few days to adjust.
Now onto the big daddy of workouts…running. I run anywhere from 5-8 miles for each run and when I am done, I am a red-faced, sweaty mess. So yes, Tom’s of Maine natural deodorant worked great for my Bar Method class, but how about through one of my hot runs?
I’d love to share a picture of me running taking a selfie, but that’s impossible (although I bet some people out there have done it before!) So I will just share my story.
The weather hasn’t begun to be that hot yet here in NJ. But my fourth day trying Tom’s of Maine natural deodorant was the day I typically run. It was about 75 degrees and the sun was shining. I decided to do my hilly run because it was so beautiful outside. It was amazing. Thank goodness I didn’t forget to wear my SPF because the sun was strong (and I don’t need any more wrinkles!) As I began my cool down part (basically I walk around the block) I realized that yes, I was sweaty ( I did just ran 6.75 miles!) but I wasn’t smelly! Tom’s of Maine natural deodorant actually held up during my hilly run! I am seriously impressed.
When trying a natural personal care product for the first time it’s important to give your body time to adjust. If your body is used to a conventional product, you might need a little time to adjust to a natural formula free of chemicals and artificial ingredients. At least it did for me. And remember, these are deodorants and not antiperspirants.
Trying the deodorant for at least 3-7 days, including testing out different scents (or unscented), can help determine the best fit for your body’s unique chemistry.
I am so glad I finally tried Tom’s Of Maine deodorant and will continue to feel good about using it. Tell me, do you read all of the ingredients in the products you use daily?
