Back to school means back to routines and back to making lunches!
This time of year is always bittersweet. By now, I am craving our normal routine, but at the same time, I want to hold on to those fun days at the pool and the long summer nights. One thing I have to get used to again is making lunches every day. Before my two older kids went to middle school, I used to make 3 lunches every night like clockwork. I was always struggling to find ideas for natural lunches that my kids would actually eat. WHY DOES THAT HAVE TO BE SO HARD?!
Now that I only make lunch for my youngest, a part of me is relieved, a part of me is sad, and the other part of me is overwhelmed.
My little guy likes variety, so I try to mix it up a bit. The one thing that is always consistently in his lunch box is Applegate Deli Meats and Cheeses. Applegate deli meats and cheeses come from animals raised with no antibiotics ever and contain no GMO ingredients. If you know me or have read my blog, you know that that is very important to me. Applegate deli meats and cheeses are made with simple, clean ingredients, nothing artificial. So many of the deli meats you find in the grocery stores are loaded with preservatives, nitrates and fillers. No, thank you.
The new Applegate Organics® pre-sliced turkey and chicken deli meat varieties are Non-GMO Project Verified and Whole30 Approved®. I can feel good about giving my kids these lunch box staples, and thank goodness they taste delicious too, which means he will actually eat them! Applegate deli meats and cheeses make packing back-to-school lunches convenient and worry-free.
Now let’s talk lunchboxes…
Start with our staple: Applegate Deli Meats and Cheeses. Funny thing is that my little guy loves to just roll them up with no tortilla or bread. That’s fine with me, it makes my life easier! I just roll up turkey, ham, and Colby cheese and then I add some “sides” to his lunch box:
- Sliced hard boiled egg
- String cheese
- Nuts/trail mix
- Carrots or some other sliced vegetable and hummus
I try to vary it as much as I can each day to avoid boredom.
But if we are going to keep it real here, my 9 year old eats WAY more than that! I want to make sure his stomach isn’t growling during class.
I also add:
- A bar with a good amount of protein and not too much sugar
Here is a more realistic picture of what I send him with…
It may seem like a lot, but he typically eats the bar at snack time and rarely comes home with any leftovers. The Kellys like to eat!
I wish I was one of those fancy Pinterest moms that cut their kids’ foods into cute and creative shapes, but I’m not. I don’t have the time or the desire to do it. I focus providing wholesome ingredients and products that I can feel good about feeding my family.
