If you are looking for a healthier Bloody Mary recipe that isn’t loaded with unnecessary calories and sodium, then look no further. Brunch just a whole lot tastier…and healthier! I’ll drink to that!

Bloody Mary - Lauren Kelly NutritionDid you know that your average bloody mary can have up to 350 calories PER SERVING and over 1,500 mgs of sodium?  I figured with everyone juicing these days, why not juice your own bloody mary?  It adds so many vitamins and nutrients that all of those mixes don’t have.

You can always use store bought tomato juice if you’d like.  Just read the ingredients (especially the sodium content!) There is so much unnecessary junk in these bottles juices.

Look for one that only is 100% juice and read the ingredients. Make sure there are no added oils or salt. The ingredients should only be tomatoes and some other vegetables, that’s it.

You guys all know that I am all about moderation and balance. I completely believe we should be able to enjoy cocktails and treats every now and then. But then I thought, what if made my cocktails actually healthy?

Yes, I said healthy, not healthier.

This delicious Bloody Mary actually contains vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in it, so yes, it is definitely a healthy option. Think about all of those other sugar-filled cocktails and you’ll see what I mean. Especially brunch cocktails because many of them are loaded with sugar and bottles juices.

Why should people who are trying to eat healthier miss out on all of the fun? And that, my friends, is precisely why I came up with this Bloody Mary.

Fresh Bloody Mary

Servings 2 sevings

Ingredients

  • 3 medium ripe organic tomatoes I used heirloom, chopped
  • 1/2 cup organic baby carrots
  • handful basil leaves
  • 1 small onion
  • juice of half lemon
  • 3 ounces quality vodka 1.5 ounces per drink
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • dash of freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 dashes sriracha sauce or hot sauce
  • 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish optional
  • fresh celery stalks for garnish
  • olives for garnish

Instructions

  1. Add tomatoes, carrots, basil and onion to food processor and pulse until chopped.
  2. Scrape sides of processor and pulse again until pureed.
  3. Run the juice through a sieve over a bowl if you'd prefer a smoother texture. Stir until all the pulp and seeds remain.
  4. Add tomato juice to a shaker along with vodka, lemon juice, salt, pepper, sriracha, Worcestershire sauce and horseradish if desired.
  5. Shake for at least 15-20 seconds.
  6. Pour into a cocktail glass onto of ice cubes. Garnish with celery sticks and olives.

These would make a perfect addition to any brunch.  And isn’t there a special holiday coming up this Sunday?  Can someone ask my kids to make this for me?  I am sure my 4 year old can handle it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Mother’s Day… it’s such a bittersweet day for me.  You don’t realize how much the media talks about and advertises this day, until you’ve lost your own mother and it turns into a commercialized day that you dread.  I lost my mother many, many years ago and it wasn’t until 10 years ago when I had my first child that I could actually smile and feel joy on Mother’s Day.

Now it has a whole new meaning to me.  Theres’ nothing better than homemade cards and love notes from my kids.  My mother is smiling down on me and my kids.

Not just on Mother’s Day but every day.  Who knows, maybe she’s sipping a bloody mary too?  Atta girl, Geri.

Homemade Bloody Mary - Lauren Kelly NutritionBack to the cocktails… You can easily make these ahead of time if you’d like, simple make the juice and store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.  Why not make life a little easier, right?

Better yet, make a whole pitcher of them so if you are making for a larger group you aren’t spending all that time making each individual drink.  Make life easier and entertaining much more fun! This way if you are the host or hostess you can actually enjoy yourself too.

Honestly, that’s my least favorite part about hosting. I am typically the one that has a couple of cocktails and ultimately I will forget to put out something because I really want to have fun with my guests. I don’t want to be stuck in the kitchen making drinks or cooking.

Before you email me saying that you can’t believe a nutritionist is encouraging drinking alcohol, settle down. (And yes, I do get these emails). I am very realistic and I truly believe that moderation is attainable.

I really enjoy drinking a cocktail or two on occasion and I believe that I can still achieve a healthy, balanced lifestyle that includes the occasional cocktail. You can absolutely disagree with me, and that’s ok. It’s a free world for Pete’s sake. But this is what I believe to be true.

With that being said, I can only have one or two drinks, aka moderation. If you aren’t able to, then you have to do what works for you. Every body is different.  I am only sharing what works for me.
